"I Have a Dream" Foundation - Fort Worth

                "Making a difference through education."

The "I Have a Dream" Foundation - Fort Worth is part of a national non-profit organization founded in New York in 1981.  Mollie Lasater brought the concept to Fort Worth in 1988 and since that time over 500 economically disadvantaged students have been helped by the program.

"I Have a Dream" (IHAD) adopts entire classes of economically disadvantaged children from and stays with those students (Dreamers) right through high school graduation and into college.  Our programs maintain locations at or near the schools where Dreamers are provided with after school snacks, homework help, summer learning/fun programs, tutoring, mentoring, community service opportunities, field trips, awards ceremonies and any other assistance available to insure their personal growth and scholastic success.

The mission of the “I Have a Dream”  Foundation is to provide comprehensive support and encouragement for students to become productive citizens by completing high school and utilizing IHAD scholarship assistance for continuing education.

Manuel Jara Dreamer Jennifer Sotelo was honored by selection of  the President's committee to attend a five day conference in Washington with other students in April 2006.  During the conference, these students met with government officials and discussed the school situation as well as education in the United States.  IHAD is proud of Dreamers like Jennifer who are learning about our country from the ground up!

Our other Dreamers in the area include college graduates in the nursing and criminal justice fields.  Their "stopping by" to tell us of their lives and families is a highlight for the entire foundation.

Message from the Executive Director:

Our Dreamers are now in grades from 6 - 12. The older Dreamers are currently enrolled in over 20 different schools in the Fort Worth area.  Keeping them in the fold is a feat but, our motto is: “Once a Dreamer, always a Dreamer!”

This year’s programming focus is: Back to the Basics! We are concentrating on the four modules:

  • Mentoring Component

  • Parent Component
  • Academics Component

  • Community Service Component

We hope you will look into our program for ways you can support our mission.  Our yearly annual event centered on reading for children (Reading Rocks) is held in February at the Ridglea Country Club.  This years event featured famous children's writer/illustration Steven Kellogg.  His presentation delighted all who attended, young and old.  Please check this website for information on the 2007 event.

Thank you for your support!
